At the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025 held in Sunshine Coast, Australia, the Indian team achieved an impressive 7th position out of 110 countries, bringing home three gold, two silver, and one bronze medal.

This marks only the second time in history that India has clinched three gold medals at the IMO (the first was in 1998). With a record-breaking total score of 193 out of 252, this year’s team also set a new national benchmark.

Meet the 2025 IMO Champions:
  • Kanav Talwar – Gold
  • Aarav Gupta – Gold
  • Adhitya Mangudy – Gold
  • Abel George Mathew – Silver
  • Aadish Jain – Silver

Consistent Growth: India’s Journey at IMO

Since debuting in 1989, India has made it to the IMO top 10 seven times in 35 years. The past few years have seen a remarkable surge: from 2019 to 2025, Indian students have bagged 12 gold medals, including nine in just the last three years. Last year, India achieved its best-ever rank of 4th with four golds.

What is the International Mathematical Olympiad?

The IMO is the world’s most prestigious mathematics competition for high school students. Each year, six students represent their country, tackling challenging problems in algebra, geometry, combinatorics, and number theory. The rigorous selection and training process ensures that only the best mathematical minds represent India at this global stage.
