- Sample Question: "Explain how the writer presents the character of Mr. Smith in lines 15–35. Use evidence from the text to support your ideas."
- Worked Example: Writer uses phrases such as “he scowled darkly at the room” to show Mr. Smith’s anger. The word “scowled” suggests a negative attitude…
- Common Mistakes & Exam Tips:

- Answer *every part* of the question—look for keywords like 'how', 'why', 'effect'.
- Write summaries in your own words—don’t copy phrases directly.
Paper 2: Directed Writing & Composition
- Directed Writing: e.g., "Write an article for your school magazine about the benefits of exercise, using information from the provided text."
- Narrative/Descriptive Example: "Write a story which begins, ‘It was the most important letter I had ever received…’"
- Worked Example (Opening): It was the most important letter I had ever received. My hands shook as I tore open the envelope, the world tilting around me…
- Common Mistakes & Exam Tips:
- **Plan before you write.** Note down main points and order.
- For directed writing, use information from the text and adapt it to your purpose.
- Vary sentence structure—mix short, punchy sentences with longer ones.
- For stories, avoid clichés and keep your plot focused.
- Leave time to check grammar and punctuation.
